Top 10 Family Board Games

Updated on June 9, 2014

Have a night of family fun with these awesome board games!

Ever since I was a kid I've always enjoyed playing board games with my friends and family. The games here are some of my favorites that I loved to play for hours. These games are good for adults, teens and kids over 6 years old - some of them I still play today with my 7 year old brother.

The next time you are looking for a rainy day activity or want to spend some time with your kids or friends, why not turn off that TV and try a board game? Some of these games don't actually include a board, but may be played with cards or dice instead, they are still included because I loved them!

Apples to Apples

Apples to Apples is my absolute favorite game. On the rare occasion my family gets together to play a game, this is the one we play. It's always fun, and you get unique combinations every game. I'd have to say that without this game, I would have definitely spent less time with my family.

Apples to Apples Video

Here is a video of people starting to play this game, that I found on Youtube.com

Guesstures

This is my second favorite game. (under Apples to Apples) We got this game from my sister's fiance's parents for Christmas one year. Personally I love charades, so naturally I love this game. Although I've had a few games which I felt were unfair, but then again solving the hard ones makes you feel good. I remember playing the game with my friend Corey, my sister, and one of her friends. I remember in one of our games, one of the words my sister's team got was "foot" while the very next turn I had, my team got "snowshoe", which is obviously much harder than foot. All in all, I love the game, and would play it anytime that we had enough people that were also willing to play it.

Electronic Guesstures
Electronic Guesstures
In this game your divided into two teams. One person on the team acts out the word they see on one side of the Guesstures game, while the other people can only see the side showing how much time is left. The same rules apply to Guesstures that applies to charades, such as no speaking, or sounds of any type. The goal is to get as many words guessed as possible before time runs out, but be careful, because if you try to guess another word, and don't guess it, then you get no points for the round. First team up to 15 points wins.

Guesstures

This video is of the original Guesstures game. I couldn't find a video of the electronic version, but it's basically the same game, except you are divided into teams. (which it doesn't seem like you are in the old version, but I myself haven't played the old one.)

Clue

Clue is a great game. In this game, you can be too good though. My friends often refuse to play it with me, saying that I cheat at it, usually jokingly, but still refusing to play. While at the same time, my mom can beat me just as much as i beat her at the game. The only way I could get my friends to play, was to teach them my strategy, and then still they didn't want to play it too often. But I still had plenty of fun playing it with my mom, and my sister over the years. In fact, I don't even remember getting this game, I just remember always having it.

Winning Moves Games Clue Classic with 1949 Card Artwork & Suspects USA, Original Whodunnit Murder Mystery Game with Metal Weapons for 3to 6 Players, Ages 8 and up
Clue is a great mystery game. Using the dice to move your character around the board, you have to solve the crime of who the murderer was, in which room they did it in, and with what weapon. This is done using cards. One weapon, one person, and one room, and randomly chosen, and placed into a packet in the middle of the board. The rest are delt evenly to all the players. Using a sheet of paper your given, which has the names of the people, the weapons, and the rooms on it, you can scratch out the cards you have, because what you have, obviously cannot be in the middle. When you arrive at a room you can choose to test a theory out. Calling out a persons name, and a weapon to go with the room your in. Going around the table people tell you whether or not they can prove you wrong. If they can, they show you ONE card that proves you wrong, and your turn ends there. You now know one more card that is not in the middle. Learn them all and be the first to solve the mystery to win. This game is one of my personal favorites.

Risk

I first played this game at my friend Corey's house some years ago. Although, I'm not certain we followed the rules exactly, the game was fun. I believe we were the only two people there at the time. Anyway we spent a couple hours playing this game, which didn't actually seem like it took that long. I got the very same game for Christmas that year, and learning how to play it right, taught my family, which has played it several times since then. The only downfall, is my family isn't a patient one, so playing long games such as Risk or Monopoly doesn't happen often.

Risk: The Game of Strategic Conquest
Risk: The Game of Strategic Conquest
This is a good game, but prepare to spend a decent amount of time on it when playing. If you like strategy games, then this is a must for you. In this game you have to conquer the world. You have to know when and where to defend, where/when to attack, and when to hold your ground. Gaining control of complete continents will grant you extra forces each turn. Using this to your advantage, and stopping your opponents from doing this is key.

Cranium

Cranium is a blast. The very first time I ever played this game was at my friend Corey's house. I'm somewhat on the shy side, but I also don't like to lose, so while playing this game at least, I'd say I wasn't shy at all. In fact I spent most of the game laughing, and blaming my friend's step-dad, who I had just met that day for our loss. (when it obviously wasn't all his fault, lol)

Here is Hasbro's commercial for Cranium, which shows clips of people playing the game.

Yahtzee

I started playing this game with my grandma, back when she was still here. Every Friday that she would watch me and my younger sister, we would beg her to play this game. I'm glad we did, because if it wasn't for this, I probably wouldn't of spent as much time with her, and wouldn't remember her as well.

Parker Brothers Yahtzee
Parker Brothers Yahtzee
Yahtzee is a classic dice rolling game. This game is fun for all ages. The point of this game is to get the highest score you can. You get to roll the dice up to three times each turn, and in that turn you have to try go get one of the patterns, 5 of a kind (which is known as a yahtzee), or as many of a number as possible. At the end of your turn, you write down your score. (the scorecard will help you out with that) If you didn't get anything, then you can add up all the numbers, and use it as your one and only "chance". If after that you roll and at the end of your turn, have nothing you can use, then you must "scratch" something. When you scratch it, you get zero points for it.

Yahtzee Video - Love these old commercials hehe!

Here is an old commercial, for an old game. But it does show the enjoyment people are having while playing it. (although it may be over dramatized a little.)

Uno

Uno is a great game. Though I mostly played it when I was a lot younger. I still enjoyed playing it with a decent amount of players. Especially when playing it in school, on a day where we had a lot of free time. It was always easy to find a bunch of people to play, and just about everybody there knew the game, and liked it themselves.

Mattel Games UNO Card Game, Multi, 8 x 3-3/4 x 81/100 in (42003)
Uno is a very fun, and simple game. In this game you have to get rid of all the cards in your hand before the other players do. The game has simple rules to follow, which someone of any age can do so. All you have to do is match the color or number of the previous card played. The twist is when cards with actions on them are played. Such as reverse, (which reverses the direction of play, meaning instead of going clockwise, you go counter-clockwise, and vise-versa.) or draw 2, which makes the next player draw 2 more cards. When your down to one card, remember to say uno, because if someone else says it first, then you have to draw 2 cards. This game can be fun to play over, and over with friends, or family.

Monopoly

Always a popular board game!

This game was always fun as a kid, although mostly because of my sister's inability to finish long games, I hadn't been able finish one until I was somewhat older. Playing against friends was always great. I won most of my games, and my strategy was always the same. I always bought everything I could, no matter I had to do to buy it. The more properties I had, the better the chance for people to land on them. Anyhow I loved this game as a kid, and would probably still play it today, if I still had friends near me who would play it.

Monopoly (EA)
Monopoly (EA)
This lengthy game is always entertaining. I don't know of anybody who hasn't heard of monopoly, but just in case you haven't then I'll tell you how it's played anyway. In this game you pick a small metal game piece to use. In this game the objective is to get your opponents to go broke. This is done by circling the board, buying properties, and passing go to collect $200, along with the chance to go to jail. When in jail you can either pay $50 to get out, or try to roll doubles. If you don't roll doubles within three turns, then you MUST pay the $50 fine. In this game, when you own a property, that your opponent lands on, they must pay you rent. Owning a complete set will allow you to add hotels, and houses which increase rent. The last thing I want to mention about this game is that, you can land on a space that will allow you to draw a card. The card being either a Chance card, or community chest card, depending on which one you land on. These cards can do anything from send you to jail, to giving you free money, or even letting you get out of jail free next time your sent to it.

Chess

The Game of Kings

Ah Chess, how I love this game. I've even went as far as to join some tournaments back in high school, winning second place two years in a row. The only thing that would make this game more enjoyable for me, is if I knew more people that could play it well. If you are having trouble finding chess partners there are various computer versions that are great for learning or playing a quick game against a speedy computer opponent..

Chess sets are not just fun but also beautiful works of art. If you like strategic games, then you should definitely learn to play chess. Learning this game might take a bit longer than some other games, but its worth it if you like this type of game. Playing chess is always a good way to outsmart your friends.

Trouble

Wait don't run, this kind of Trouble is lots of fun!

I loved this game as a kid, especially popping the die in the clear bubble! Over time I grew to appreciate more complex games although my mom, and my sisters still love Trouble. The only time I play it now is when I'm playing it with my younger brother, who loves the game. I think he enjoys being able to play the game just as well as everybody else, because you don't have to read anything, or strategize too much. This makes it a great game for younger children.

Trouble is the simplest game I know of. Press down on the center bubble, to roll the die. Move your piece that many spaces, in an attempt to go all the way home, or land on an opponent and send them back to their starting spot. To get out of your starting spot you must roll a 6 or a 1. Rolling a 6 allows you to roll again. If you haven't already played this game, then you should go out and buy it now, because regardless of its simplicity, many many hours can be spent playing this game. It's also a very great game to play with young kids, that can't quite play the more complicated board games.
