Top 1990s Female R&B Singers and Hits of the Decade

I was feeling nostalgic and had to share my love for these talented female R&B superstars and their great songs of the 90s. Many are still performing today and while sadly two have passed on too young we do have the beautiful songs to remember Aaliah and Left Eye forever.

This lens features the best R&B songs and singers from the 90s including short bios of the stars, their top youtube videos and mp3 and shopping links. Check out these sweet tracks from TLC, Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blije, Tony Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Monica, SWV and more sexy nineties r&b divas.

The Top 10 is not yet in order, so don't forget to vote in the poll to help choose who will be on top!

Aaliyah - The Best Aaliyah Music Videos

The beautiful and multi-talented singer, dancer, model and actress Aaliyah had several No.1 R&B hits from the age of 15, and also starred in two films before her tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 22 in 2001. Aaliyah's sophmore release, One in a Million in 1996, was produced by newcomers Missy Elliot and Timbaland - a huge success, it went double platinum and secured the reputations of all three artists. Aaliyah's unique style and futuristic production has been credited for helping redefine R&B and hip hop in the 1990s, leaving an indelible imprint on the music industry as a whole. Aaliyah's best known film role was in Romeo Must Die in 2000.

Brandy & Monica - The Best Brandy and Monica Music Videos

R&B singer Brandy became a huge star in the US at the age of 15 with her debut self-titled album, before gaining international recognition when a duet with Monica, “The Boy is Mine”, topped pop charts worldwide.

Destiny's Child

In the late 90s and early 00s, Destiny's Child were one of the biggest pop groups in the world, dominating radio airwaves and charts with their distinctive sassy R&B. Originally a four-piece, internal problems caused line-up changes at the height of the group's success. After carrying on as a trio, Destiny's Child announced their split during a world tour in 2005, with each member happy to pursue their solo careers instead.

The 90s wouldn't have been the 90s without the crazy-sexy-cool members of TLC. If the words "divas need not apply" made it onto recruitment materials when the act formed in Atlanta in 1991, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes never noticed: her scrapes with the law and repeated threats to quit the trio caused constant public squabbles. Still, when T-Boz, Chilli, and Left Eye managed to make it into the studio, some seriously satisfying R&B materialized; the drama never stopped the world from diggin' on them.

Toni Braxton

The pain in Toni Braxton's voice when she sang what seemed, in the early 90s, like the most popular song ever to hit the airwaves - "Unbreak My Heart" -- fell hard on the ears of R&B fans, and it fuelled a wave of hits that locked up her reputation as a from-the-gut vocal phenomenon. Through "Another Sad Love Song", "Breathe Again" and other wrenching tunes, Braxton did for ballads what Tina Turner did decades earlier with her best-loved soul numbers -- she rubbed them raw, laying bare the riptides of feeling below.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is a diva who has received her fair share of admiration and biting criticism from her many admirers and detractors. Despite the haters Mariah has a world of dedicated fans who have sent her albums to number one and made her one of the biggest-selling female artists of all time. Her critically acclaimed Grammy-winning debut Mariah Carey was released in 1990; it reached No.1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned four No.1 singles and paved the way for many more chart topping hits through the nineties.

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill reached musical fame as the lead singer in The Fugees, whose album The Score was a worldwide sensation on release in 1996. Hill's unmistakable voice can be remembered on the hit singles "Ready Or Not" and the Roberta Flack cover "Killing Me Softly". At the Grammys that year The Score won Best Rap Album and "Killing Me Softly" won Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. The Fugees debut went on to sell over 18 million copies internationally. Lauren lost no momentum and followed that up with her equally successful solo album called The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (1998). It was universally acclaimed by critics and fans alike and won an impressive five Grammy Awards in 1999, surely earning Ms Hill a seat among the top R&B female voices of the 90s.

Mary J Blige

Mary J Blige's debut album What's The 411? (1992) was so successful, fans invented a genre to describe its sound: hip-hop soul. Now known as 'the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul', Blige has sold over 40 million records and inspired countless stars of contemporary R&B.

All-female trio SWV (or Sisters with Voices) had a series of new jack swing hits during the 1990s that earned them a Grammy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Great lens!...the addition of videos adds a visual reference for me and brought back a lot of fond memories of solo artist like Left Eye and Lauren Hill and groups like Destiny's Child and Fugees.

To know that Beyonce has just "dropped" a new album and is currently number one on Billboards Top 100 with sales 118,000 copies in the first week is indicative of Beyonce's status as one of the industries most gorgeously talented recording artist...still going strong after all of these years!

Nostalgia is always fab, a trip down memory lane. I was a teenager in the 90's so this is right up my street. I loved Lauryn Hill, may be digging out some of her tunes! I love all the videos on this, it bought back some great tunes and somenot so much in my opinion anyway.

I love the feel to your writing and the layout of this. Well compiled page. :)

Couldn't agree more with Analogik. The crap they pass for R&B now is a joke. Synthesized voices have no soul whatsoever.

It's too bad about Aaliah. I fell in love with her during The Queen of the Damned lol. If she were alive today, we wouldn't even know Beyonce's name.

Great lens, but disappointed more people didn't vote for Mariah as their favorite.
